Flickr Find | Oyster Bar

Flickr Find is a weekly column of interesting things found on the amazing and inspiring photo sharing website Flickr.

The Oyster Bar in Grand Central is one of my all time favorite things about New York. The restaurant has been serving seafood — there under the train station — since Woodrow Wilson was in office. Having a solo lunch (including one or two bottles of Brooklyn Lager) at the midtown spot is one of my most treasured and sacred rituals.

J. Crew Teams with Spade, Channels Hopper.

The June/July issue of Details sheds some light on the special new J. Crew men’s store in TriBeCa. So far we know that the space —an old liquor store on West Broadway —is spectacular and sort of Edward Hopper-esq. What we learned from the Details article is even more exciting. One of the ACL’s idols Mr. Andy Spade and his new creative firm Partners & Spade, has been retained to add his retail genius into the mix. This makes me think that we could have an American interpretation of Paul Smith on our hands. I can’t wait to get a first hand look at this store and I am excited to be able to finally buy Birdwell Britches in person.

South Street and the Fulton Fish Market

The New York Times’ City Room Blog wrote an interesting article on Barbara Mensch’s book South Street and the photography exhibit that is currently being held at the South Street Seaport Museum. The show is centered around pictures of the gritty Fulton Fish Market and the people that worked there in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

The Banker Bag.

Is there a more ubiquitous bag in New York than the canvas duffels that the bankers carry? I noticed the bags frequently around the city and would always try to find a store that stocks them. I was sure that I would be able to get one on the Upper East Side, but alas no luck. At that point I started doing research and eventually found out that the bags are made by the New Canaan, CT. based Warden-Brooks, Ltd. Around the same time as this duffel quest was going on — I was trying to come up with an idea for a holiday gift for my then client J. Press. So I decided to kill two birds with one stone and commission my very own banker bag. Working with the J. Press creative director and the people at Warden-Brooks, we designed the beige canvas bag around some great deadstock navy and red wool webbing that we found on eBay. The result is a classic J. Press bag for all occasions.

The Brooklyn Flea.

Brooklyn Flea

This weekend a friend and I went to the first Brooklyn Flea in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. We didn’t make it over until around 11am (my fault; hangover) but we still arrived to lots of ironic preppy hipsters and some good flea market action. It is nice that they do start things off later than the normal 6am craziness. Gives you time to get a bagel and some coffee before heading over. After checking things out I still prefer the Elephant’s Trunk Flea in New Milford, CT. I do however give Brownstoner and the others involved credit for organizing everything. I’m sure in time, the Brooklyn Flea will be a mandatory Sunday outing. Some high points, low points and pictures after the jump.

Wish List | BMW R1200 GS

I am turning thirty this coming October and to celebrate the milestone I want to treat myself to something really special. The object of my desire, the BMW R1200 GS or what I consider the ultimate in city transportation. Nothing could be as adventurous (and dangerous!) then riding all 1200 CCs of goodness through the combat that is New York City traffic. First though, I need to go here.

The Ultimate Tote Bag.

I recently started noticing these super-strength Consolidated Edison bags all over the city. I did some research (read the name off the bag – then I googled it) and found that the industrial-totes called “Monstabag” are made by the Ace Canvas & Tent Corp in Ronkonkoma, NY. The material is really cool and it is obviously strong since they are designed to hold hundreds of pounds of dirt and concrete. I emailed Ace Canvas & Tent to see if they will make me a small version.

UPDATE – No go on the small version. Hopefully someone will do a collaboration with them soon.

Only in New York | Luxury Moving.

fre2.pngNew York is the capital of the service universe. If you have a crazy idea for a company, New York City is the one place that has enough people with the disposable income to make it a success. With everything in the world being “luxury” these days, companies have to work hard to find new services that distinguish themselves to the 10021 set. Enter Flatrate Elite, the high-end moving company that provides the world’s only true luxury moving experience. The company professes to have thought of everything, from providing you with your own private “elite liaison”, to setting up all of your electronics, to moving your rare wine collection. This really seems like something Michael Shvo would think up. How long until Flatrate Elite is the official mover of the W New York Downtown? Also, how has this not been covered in New York Magazine?

Literally, all you need is a Centurion Card and a lot of nice stuff that needs moving. You barely have to know your address. Okay, all you have to know is your name and how to use your cell phone. That’s it!

More info from the company’s website.

“Led by your personal Elite Liaison, we’ll handle everything you need for your move from start to finish. From planning and logistics, to unpacking and setup, we’ll move you to your new home while beautifully managing and protecting your art, antiques, wine collection, pianos, buildings, and more in the process.”

When Patrick Met Jean.

I am a total sucker for a romantic comedy. This video is pure genius.

Seeing how American Psycho has become 50% of the meager beginning of this blog…i’m going to hold off on any more references for a while.
